TRUTH or TRADITION

Why did Herod slaughter all the children of Bethlehem that were two years old & under?

The wise men brought the news of the birth of the Christ child to Herod by asking, "...Where is he born King of the Jews?"  This immediately arrested Herod's attention.  Herod's knowledge of Jewish heritage and prophecy was one of the main reasons he was tetrarch over the Jews.  He knew that the prophetic King was to restore the kingdom to Israel as it was under the leadership of King David.  Herod would not tolerate any rival, let alone someone who was prophesied to remove him from his kingship, and overthrow any government that presently was in authority over the Jews.  His supposed interest was really to find out who this King was, where He was located, and destroy Him, before He could come to power.  After counseling with Jewish scholars, as to where this King was prophesied to be born, he told the wise men that Bethlehem was where they should go.  Of course, Herod, in return for this information, expected the wise men to inform him of the child's whereabouts under the guise of wanting to render to Him His due benevolence.

Finding Jesus in the house by seeing His star hovering above, the wise men came and worshipped Him, leaving behind gifts, wealth, and a legacy which has stood the test of centuries.  Being warned in a dream, they returned to their country without saying anything to Herod, which in turn infuriated him.  He then sets off on a rampage, fulfilling prophecy himself, (Jeremiah 31:15), yet not knowing it.  But why the two year olds and under?
