TRUTH or TRADITION How wealthy was King
Solomon? The Bible proclaims that Solomon was to be the richest and wisest man ever. No one before him, nor anyone after him, was to have the wisdom nor the wealth of King Solomon. We read of the "ten wealthiest men of the world", and hear of their billions. Ever wonder how much King Solomon was worth? 1 Kings 9:28 tells us that 420 talents of gold was brought to Solomon on one particular occasion. A talent is equal to 108 lbs., and at 16 ounces to the lb., that's 1,728 ounces. Now a troy ounce is equal to 480 grains, where our standard ounce is equal to 437 1/2 grains. So, at $400.00 a troy ounce, a standard ounce of gold would be valued at $364.58/ounce. 420 talents would then be worth a whopping $264,597,580.80 at today's values. It is related in 1 Kings 10:10, that the Queen of Sheba brought 120 talents of gold, along with spices and jewels of equal value, (according to historians). And in verse 14 of the same chapter, it says that 666 talents of gold came to Solomon each year, over a reign of 40 years. Verse 26 tells us that he had 1400 chariots, and horses brought from Egypt (vs. 28). Figuring two horses per chariot, and figuring the horses were no doubt Arabians of the best breeding at a conservative $1000.00 each, (I personally stroked the strong neck of a Tennessee Walker stallion valued at $250,000.00), Solomon amassed a fortune of $2,800,000.00 in horses alone. There are no given amounts to accumulated wealth pertaining to the exotic animals, ivory, and silver that was brought to him every three years. (1 Kings 10:22). Taking only the figures we have here, his amassed fortune amounts to approximately, $17,201,642,752.00 In 1925, the Illinois Society of Architects figured the cost of building and furnishing the great Temple would amount to $87,000,000.00. At our current inflation rate, the value today would be three times that amount. Solomon was no doubt the richest man ever. Yet, the book of Ecclesiastes describes a man of bitterness and dissolution, for of all he had he acclaimed it to be nothing more than vanity, and vexation of spirit. Wealth, prestige, and possessions will not save you. It is only what you do for Christ that will last. Don't accept tradition as fact. Remember, ask yourself, what does the Book say?
